Speech Therapy Theme: January (January, Winter)

Ideas for fun and amazing January Speech Therapy!

My favorite theme for speech and language therapy in January is Snowmen! I have lots of ideas for books, read alouds, songs, child led play, toys, and games to use with this fun theme.

Lesson Plan

Grab this Lesson Plan Page filled with links to freebies, toys, books, read-alouds and more! This works well for preschool and early elementary students.

Therapy Ideas

In January, I love to use toys, books, and games in child led play as much as possible. When structure is needed or helpful, I include this as well. At home, we hope for a good snow….and most of us get outside in it. We do have a couple who don’t enjoy cold…they like to do fun things inside. I let my kids freely do arts and crafts and make paper snowflakes. This activity brings out lots of natural language and gives me the opportunity to model gestalts for my Gestalt Language Processor.

“It’s so much fun!”

“Let’s make a big one!”

“It’s too sticky!”

“It’s so sparkly!”

You’re probably looking at my play setup above and thinking “ummm….ice cream in January?” Hear me out….Melissa and Doug have this durable, long lasting, super fun ice cream set. It absolutely matches up with the ice cream in Sneezy the Snowman! You have to check it out. I made a boom card deck to go along with this (back a couple of years ago when we weren’t able to get together in person).

Favorite Books

I love including books in my sessions and at home. A couple of recent favorites are Moosletoe and Ten Silly Snowmen. My kids and students love the repetition of Ten Silly Snowmen and moving the interactive pieces in and out of the book.

Here are some book ideas by theme.
