Anything you’re going through is valid-and my experience likely doesn’t parallel yours.

I’m thankful for our wonderful journey, and a world that is becoming more accepting, loving, and supportive.

Next week I will be presenting on supporting neurodivergent students in the Gen Ed setting. My goal is to share information on neurodiversity from a variety of sources to give them the knowledge they can use to better understand their students. We will also discuss tangible ways they can make changes to support those students tomorrow, with what they have right now, within their setting, funding (or lack of funding), experience level, and work based boundaries. We’re going to mush those two contrasts together to make positive change that can take place immediately.

I’ve done this in Title One schools, private practice, Headstart, universities. Each had a unique set of parameters and nuances that I have to respect and listen to. Short term ideas don’t negate long term push back against bigger systems.

Neurodiversity is not just about autism. It’s about adhd, anxiety, stuttering, ocd, depression, genetic disorders, cerebral palsy, academically gifted, and so much more. Sometimes that term gets hijacked with mostly good intention, but fails to meet the needs of the others under the umbrella.

And with that…I need a break. I appreciate the discussion, the feedback…but I am also a real human being. Dichotomy is so dangerous, including making widespread assumptions and giving blanket advice on social media.
